What to Expect While Using a Holter Monitor to Measure the Heart’s Rhythm

by | Feb 22, 2022 | Health

Sometimes, an electrocardiogram doesn’t give the doctor enough data about the heart’s rhythm. When that happens, they may recommend a Holter monitor to their patients. It’s worn for several days while it records the heart, measuring its rhythm.

A Holter Monitor Is Used to Measure the Heart’s Rhythm

Most of the time, doctors use EEGs to measure the heart’s rhythm. However, they’re not always able to give them a clear picture of what’s going on. Measuring the heart using a special device can give them a clearer picture.

When Are They Given to Patients?

If the doctor suspects someone has an arrhythmia, they’ll order their patients to wear one. Usually, they have to wear them for a few days while taking measurements. Once it’s finished, the patient no longer has to keep it on.

What’s the Procedure Like?

Since it’s a noninvasive procedure, you shouldn’t expect much going into it. They’ll place a couple of electrodes on your body, which can be hidden under the clothes. It might feel uncomfortable wearing it while you’re sleeping, but it’s necessary. Don’t take them off until the doctor lets you know it’s ok.

Are There Any Risks?

Wearing one of them doesn’t have any particular risks. So, there’s not much to worry about if the doctor asks you to put one on. Be careful whenever bathing, or the device could get damaged. They’re not waterproof, so caution must be exercised.

After wearing the monitor for several days, the doctors will let you know what they’ve seen. If there’s anything wrong with your heart’s rhythm, they’ll advise you of your options.
