Do Not Miss the Total Solar Eclipse of 2024!

by | Apr 30, 2019 | Eclipses

On Sunday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will be visible in some areas of the United States. While the last total solar eclipse to be seen in the United States occurred in 2017, the event will draw large crowds to the path of totality.

Solar Eclipse

There are three different types of solar eclipses: Total eclipse, partial eclipse, and annular eclipse. The total solar eclipse of 2024 will be a total eclipse. A total eclipse is when the moon completely blocks out the sun causing observers in the path of totality to experience twilight.

Path of Totality

While the 2017 event tracked across tracked from Oregon all the way to South Caroline, the total solar eclipse of 2024 will begin Mexico then on to the state of Texas and ending in Maine before crossing into Canada.

The duration of totality will depend on the viewer’s location. The greatest duration will be four minutes and 28 seconds and will occur in Mexico. In Dallas, Texas, the duration of totality is three minutes and 42 seconds. Most U.S. cities along the path of totality will experience approximately three minutes of darkness.

Events

Many U.S. cities have already begun planning for the total solar eclipse of 2024. The event, just like the total solar eclipse in 2017, represents an opportunity to entertain and educate millions of visitors to cities located within the path of totality. Many cities offer eclipse viewing parties that also highlight the attractions in the local area.

If you plan on watching the total solar eclipse of 2024, ensure that you wear a pair of solar eclipse glasses to protect your eyes from the damaging rays of the sun. Never attempt to look directly at the sun without a solar lens. Eclipse glasses are reasonably priced and can be ordered online.
