Choosing a warehouse racking system matters if you want to effectively use every available storage in your facility. The best solution makes the most of your storage capacity, resulting in increased inventory. Here’s what to consider when shopping for options.
Product Mix
Consider your product mix. For low SKU, high volume operations, a deep-lane storage system, like pushback or drive-in racks will allow you to sacrifice selectivity you do not require for greater storage density. On the other hand, if you have a high number of different SKU’s and a low volume of each, you will want to consider a solution with greater selectivity. For instances where longer products like
wood, metals or pipes are being stored, give cantilever racks a try. Those options will help you increase your warehouse space.
Picking Requirements
In what increments does your team pick and distribute products? Factor that into your decision since that also affects the type of warehouse racking system that can address your operational needs. Also, are your products handled on a First-In, First-Out (FIFO) or Last-In, First-Out (LIFO) basis? For instance, if you now have products that require first in first out, you may consider pallet flow racks versus a push back system.
System Used
What kind of warehouse racking solution do you have right now? Assess the condition of your shelving units. Are they efficient? For how many more years can you use them? You can add on to some systems. But not all racks are scalable. Also, the needs of your company may have evolved over time. Consider an entirely new system that lets you increase your storage efficiency.
Forklift Access
Do you use a forklift in your warehouse? You’ll need to make sure your existing equipment works with whatever rack solution you implement. Will it have enough space so your crew can move around with ease? That will affect the width of your aisles and the size and position of your racks. Can you reposition, remove, and store items with your forklift easily with the space you have? Choose a warehouse racking solution with all that in mind.
