Disasters or accidents do not come with a warning, but you must have a plan in place for disaster recovery. Businesses which make extensive use of data, the worst disaster could be system downtime or total failure of system.

Security of important data is vital for business. Failure to recover critical data loss and reconstruct it again can even force certain companies to fold up business for ever. Data files are very important assets of most industries, their loss in absence of disaster recovery plan can hamper day to day working of the company.

By disaster we mean not only earthquakes, floods and fires which are natural calamities but with reference to business it could also be hard disk or server crash, sudden power failure or even a virus attack on network.

Imagine failure of hard disks of all computers in your office and hundreds of files and reports including flash drives, zip discs and CDs missing. Without computers you will be unable to retrieve those files. No IT service provider will be able to help you under these conditions.

One may dismiss as hypothetical that whole data will be wiped out in a single stroke. But that is the whole concept behind disaster recovery plan. You won’t ever know when disaster will take place, but you will have to be prepared for it in advance.

Preparing a disaster recovery plan for your data by providing only a backup site will not help. You ill need a detailed plan of action covering each and every crucial sector. You may have to involve intelligent people and they may take several weeks to formulate data disaster recovery plan. After preparing a draft, plan will have to be tested in actual disaster scenario. The mock data disaster recovery will involve testing of each step of disaster recovery plan.

An important aspect of disaster recovery plan is the data backup service site. There are different types of data backup service sites, simplest to create is cold backup site. This recovery strategy is creation of vacant space where you begin reconstruction of previous data files in order to return to normalcy.

Recent backups serve as backbone for the data recovery process. It is therefore necessary to conduct backups on regular basis and make multiple copies of backup files and store off-site.

Apart from trial runs, disaster recovery plan for data must be reviewed periodically for its effectiveness.
